Kenpo Karate for Everyone in Redding, CA
Our Mission
Building People,
Not Just Students
At Scott Halsey’s Kenpo Karate, through self-defense training, students acquire the skills that allow them to feel good about themselves, and are useful in times of need. Martial arts allow people to be confident without the need to bully or belittle others. Ultimately, the karate student is a strong and capable person who is a help to those around them in many ways.
Students at Scott Halsey’s Kenpo Karate range in age from three to sixty. Every student comes in with a different agenda. The youngest students may have parents with interests in having their children learn basic skills such as taking instruction from teachers and spatial awareness. Elementary school age students may be interested in learning skills to be like their favorite Martial Arts hero. Young and older adults may be looking for self-defense skills as well as a fun way to stay in shape.
Whatever your reasons, Scott Halsey’s Kenpo Karate offers a full staff of highly qualified instructors ready to help each student achieve their individual goals and needs.
Introductory Lessons
The purpose of the Introductory Course is for the beginning student to learn some basic moves and etiquette of the school, to become familiar with the instructors and to try it out without making a big commitment.
The lessons are scheduled at the student’s convenience and no uniform is required: loose-fitting clothing will do. From the very first lesson the student will learn, and be able to apply, practical methods with which to defend oneself.

“Welcoming and I love that my child got one on one classes prior so she could be prepared to be in the class made it so much more comfortable and it came highly recommended by multiple sources.”
– Brigit Bowman
“Incredible place! We started both our boys ages 16 and 8 here about a month ago and it’s been amazing. Scott the owner is fantastic. He’s a great balance of bringing discipline and expectation, with fun and grace. Both our boys had no previous experience with martial arts and are both thriving. We’re very happy with the quality of teaching and overall positive environment. I highly recommend them!“
– Betsy Erickson
“If you are looking for a martial art to join to better yourself, look no further. Mr. Halsey and his other instructors are very knowledgeable in the art and classes are offered 5 days a week at a very reasonable price..”
– Jeremy Clifford

Is Kenpo Karate Right for Me (or My Child)?
Parents and adults often share the same worries before starting — here are the most common concerns we hear, and why they don’t need to hold you back:
“I need to get in shape before I start.”
Starting is the first step toward getting in shape. Classes are structured for beginners and experienced students alike, with instruction that supports your goals no matter where you’re starting from.
“My child is too young… or I might be too old.”
We work with students ages 3 through 60+. Everyone begins at their own level, and instruction is tailored to each student’s abilities and goals.
“We’ll feel behind or out of place in a group class.”
You won’t be thrown in unprepared. All new students start with four private Intro Lessons to learn the basics, meet the instructors, and feel comfortable before joining a class.
“What if we try it and it’s not a good fit?”
The Intro Course is a low-pressure, low-commitment way to test it out. You’ll know quickly if it’s right for you — with no long-term obligation.
